Hey, Have you started drawing Kolam?
I hope you are one of the artists who draw kolam, especially during Margazhi month.
This post is for you. You may or may not know the facts behind drawing the kolam in the early morning.
I want to explain the facts and benefits of it. Here we go.,
What is Kolam (Rangoli)?
It is a kind of floor drawing drawn using Rice Flour, and it is a tradition believed to have originated about 5,000 years ago.
People say that the kolam has been drawn to welcome Lakshmi, the Goddess of Prosperity, into the home and drives away the evil spirits.
But the purpose of kolam these days is to add aesthetic value to the home and be competitive with neighbors’ houses.
Margazhi Kolam
It is followed in some houses all through the year, but we draw kolam only during Margazhi month in some homes. It brings happiness to your household.
One of the reasons for drawing kolam using rice flour is to provide food for ants, but the vital factor is improving our physical health.
Health Benefits of Drawing Kolam
While drawing it, it is a great physical exercise. When people bend their bodies to draw kolam, their backbone is bent in a position called Yogasana. It strengthens the spine and is a good exercise for the waist and hip.
The cow dung mixed with fresh air helps purify the air and kill unwanted insects, and it allows us to breathe the fresh air of nature.
Another factor involved in drawing Kolam is that it increases one’s creativity and concentration because the person who draws should have a lot of focus, patience, and concentration on the kolam; otherwise, it makes them re-draw again.
Importance of Kolam in Margazhi
We are at a time of the year which is considered significant for those on the spiritual path. The Tamil month of Margazhi starts from December 16. At this time of year the planet Earth is closest to the sun. In the northern hemisphere, this should have been the hottest month, but it is the coolest because the northern face of the planet is facing away from the sun. The closeness to the sun renders an angle where the sun’s rays are diffused as they hit the planet. They fail to warm the earth as they would have if it were a little away. But in terms of the sun’s gravity functioning on the planet, right now it is at the highest. January 2 is the day when the planet is closest to the sun, so the maximum pull of the sun’s gravity happens at this time. That is the effect the Margazhi month has on the human system – it pulls you from the base.

Hence try to wake up in the early morning and get all the health benefits from nature which has everything in itself, without spending any extra effort.
The only effort you need to make is to come out from your laziness. Though you are not part of Kolam, you can wake up early in the morning and breathe some fresh air to keep you healthy always.
